Griete Arentsdochter (Grietje Arents), an Anabaptist martyr, was banished from Holland for having been (re) baptized, returned, and was arrested at Amsterdam. In the records she is said to have been an old sick and dull woman, refusing to recant. On 21 December 1534 she was sentenced to death by drowning because of heresy and disobedience to the public authorities. Griete was a native of Limmen near Alkmaar, Dutch province of North Holland, a center of ardent Anabaptism in 1533-1540.
