Foeke Wiglers Gorter, one of the last untrained Mennonite ministers (leekeprekers) in the Netherlands, became preacher at Knijpe in 1783 and in Sappemeer on 14 February 1790. Here he died on 8 May 1836. In 1790 he served as one of the four commissars who supported Wolter ten Cate as manager of the Groninger Sociëteit of the Old Flemish, and after the death of ten Cate (in 1796) he became the manager. He wrote several booklets of religious instruction.
