Maria (Dueck) Ginter (1909-1990): caregiver and chiropractor; born 1 October 1909 in Rosengard, Manitoba, to Diedrich "Derk" Dueck (1886-1963) and Agatha Dueck (1883-1965). She was the 2nd of 7 children. Maria was baptized on 24 May 1926 and she married Peter Friesen (1907-1938) on 3 April 1927 in Schönfeld. Peter Friesen operated a sawmill with his father, providing firewood for other residents in the area.

Maria and Peter Friesen had three children before Peter died of typhoid fever in 1938. Maria (Dueck) Friesen married Jacob S. Ginter, son of Dietrich D. Ginter (1900-1983) and Maria (Siemens) Ginter (1897-1986) on 20 June 1942.  They had two children, one of whom died the day of her birth.

Several years later, Maria Dueck Ginter began to work as a chiropractor. Her father was her mentor in this venture. Maria learned about liniments and oils from him, and she followed his chiropractic methods. She was unable to charge any fees for her services as she was unlicensed, but she accepted gifts from the people she helped. Maria’s work was popular, and she stayed busy with making house calls and treating the people who came to her door. She continued to offer her chiropractic services for many years. She kept a garden in which she grew vegetables for the family, and she also grew beans for sale in St. Boniface. Despite a fire in 1972 that destroyed the Ginter house and most of Maria and Jacob’s belongings, she continued to enjoy hosting her children and grandchildren for family celebrations.  Maria died after an asthma attack on 23 July 1990 in Steinbach, Manitoba.
