Johann Gerber, known as Stockhannes (1838-July 8, 1918), lived "im Stock" near Langnau, Switzerland, from a well-to-do farmer family. Shortly after 1870 Gerber, who until then was a "worldly man," was converted. In August 1875 he was ordained as preacher of the large but decadent congregation of the Emmental, and was soon after appointed elder. Through his piety, his love for the church, and his activity he greatly built up the congregation. Two meetinghouses, at Kehr in 1888 and in Bowil-Bomatt in 1899, were built during his eldership. Johann Gerber, though a man of little education, was a great blessing to die Mennonite  church. The Martyrs' Mirror and the faithful loyalty of the martyrs were always a powerful inspiration for him.
