Gelder, Arend van (1756-1798)

Arend van Gelder was a Dutch Mennonite minister, son of Preacher Hendrik van Gelder and Maria Smidt, b. 1756 at Ouddorp, d. 1798 at Groningen. He was baptized at West-Zaandam in 1783. Having been trained for the ministry by his father, he passed his examination to become a ministerial candidate in 1785 before the board of the Mennonite church of West-Zaandam. Thereupon he served the congregations of Norden, East Friesland, Germany, 1785-1795, and Groningen (United Waterlanders and New-Flemish in the Pelsterstraat) 1795-1798. Then he resigned because of bad health and died soon after. He was married first to Dirkje Bakker of Norden and afterwards to Catharina Vissering of Leer.
