Gebietsamt

Gebietsamt (Russian, Volost; i.e., district government) was the name (German) of the authority established by Mennonites in Russia to govern a large settlement consisting of a number of villages; its head was the Oberschulze. This form of Mennonite district self-government was transplanted from the Mennonite settlements in Russia to Manitoba, Mexico, and South America.
