Frisian Islands (Dutch)

To the Dutch province of Friesland belong three islands, Ameland, Schiermonnikoog, and Terschelling. Ameland had a population of 2,258 in 1947, of whom 311 were Mennonites. There were three congregations: Ballum, Hollum, and Nes. Schiermonnikoog had (1947) a population of 767, including 12 Mennonites. Terschelling had a population (1947) of 3,544, of whom 264 were Mennonites. It hads one congregation with a meetinghouse at West-Terschelling. In the 17th century there was a small congregation here, belonging to the Jan Jakobsz group. Jacob Claassen, an elder 1612-1638, baptized five new members here at one time. Further records do not exist.
