Friesen, Johann Isaak (1860-1941)
Johann Friesen (15 January 1860-22 January 1941) was born in the Molotschna settlement in South Russia as the oldest of the six children of Abram Friesen. In 1874 the family came to America and settled in Manitoba. Through a serious accident he was led to conversion at the age of 19, and was baptized as a member of the Kleine Gemeinde on 3 Augusst 1879. In 1880 he married Helena Penner. They lived in the village of Blumenort, and had eight children. In 1892 they moved to Steinbach, MB, where he became a partner in a milling business, remaining in the business for 26 years. He was known to be very punctual in his office work or any other obligation. After the death of his first wife in 1917 he married Mrs. Abram K. Friesen (d. 1939) at Meade, KS, and lived there until 1940, when he returned to Steinbach. He died there on Jan. 22, 1941, at the age of 81 years.
Johann Friesen was interested in Mennonite history and was very gifted in tracing back various relationships, for over a century. He traced his own ancestry back to Abraham von Riesen (1756-1810), who emigrated from Prussia to Russia, where the name was changed to Friesen.
