Friesen, David (1807-1893)
David Friesen: Oberschulze of the Molotschna settlement, Ukraine, South Russia, in 1848-1865; born 7 October 1807 in Halbstadt, Molotschna Mennonite Settlement, South Russia, the son of Abraham A. and Catarina Friesen. David married Helena Klaassen (25 August 1812, Tiege, Molotschna, South Russia - 21 September 1892, Halbstadt, Molotschna) on 18 February 1832; they had four children. David died in Halbstadt in 1893.
Friesen was Oberschulze of the Molotschna during the time of the struggle of the landless Mennonites of the settlement for recognition of their demands and for acquisition of land. Through their organization (see Landlosen-Kommission) and the support of the government they finally achieved their aim. David Friesen was a strong supporter of the landholding class, opposing the distribution of the surplus land among the landless.
