Jan Frericks (Frederiksen), a member of the Flemish congregation of Deventer, Dutch province of Overijssel, was much interested in the troubles which the Swiss Brethren had in their country. The [[Amsterdam Mennonite Library (Bibliotheek en Archief van de Vereenigde Doopsgezinde Gemeente te Amsterdam)|Amsterdam Mennonite Library]] contains a letter by him, dated 6 January 1708 and addressed to Herman Schijn at Amsterdam (Inv. Arch. Amst. I, No. 1254a), in which he gives details about the situation and troubles of the Mennonites in Bern. In March 1710, when a number of Swiss Brethren, who had been expelled and were on their enforced transport to America, were to pass through the Netherlands, Frericks contacted the Dutch States-General and the ambassadors of Switzerland and England in The Hague, and undoubtedly it was largely due to Frericks that the Swiss Mennonites were set free on 6 April, when their ship arrived at Nijmegen, Holland. Information about Frericks' intervention is found in "Aanteekeningen over de vervolgingen in Zwitserland," by Hendrik Toren, a manuscript in the Amsterdam Mennonite Library (Inv. Arch.

Amst. I, 1009; see also I, Nos. 1329, 1870, 1904). Of Jan Frericks himself no further information was available. He was well versed in the French, German, and English languages. He was unmarried and evidently a merchant.
