Frans (Francoys) van Leuvene, an Anabaptist martyr, born at Ghent, Belgium, a weaver, was put to death at Ghent with three others, "not on account of any misdeed, but only because they, according to the command of the eternal God, had separated from this corrupt world, which lies in inhuman wickedness, and sought, according to their weak ability, to follow Christ in the regeneration." Frans had been baptized at Ghent in 1569, and was executed on 28 July 1573 on the Vrijdagsmarkt, together with Jacob van der Wege, Hendrick Bauwens, and Calleken Meere. During the execution the sympathy of the spectators for the four victims, who were prevented by gags from speaking to them, was so great that incidents could not be prevented.
