Johannes Fontanus, an important Reformed preacher and zealous Calvinist, served at Neuhausen near Worms, Germany, and from 1578 on at Arnhem, Dutch province of Gelderland. Here he opposed the Mennonites and induced the council to take steps to suppress them (23 March 1591, and regulation of 1596) and forbid their meetings (1 November 1607 and 21 August 1608).
