Fisher (Illinois, USA)
Fisher, Illinois, a town (1955 population 800; 2000 population 1,647) located in east central Illinois in Champaign County, about 20 miles (33 km) northwest of Champaign-Urbana, served the fertile agricultural area near by. The Mennonite settlement began in 1883, when a few Mennonites came from Tazewell County, Illinois to the northwest corner of Champaign County. In 1954 the Mennonite population was located for the most part north, east, and west of the town. Over half of the membership of some 500 lived within shopping distance of Fisher; of this number nearly 100 actually lived in town. The Mennonite population of the town increased steadily during the previous decade. The Mennonites in this area were served by the East Bend Mennonite Church (Mennonite Church USA), located two miles north and one mile east of Fisher.
