Etliche schöne Christliche Geseng
Etliche schöne Christliche Geseng wie sie in der Gefengkniss zu Passaw im Schloss von dem Schweitzer Brüdern durch Gottes gnad geticht vnd gesungen worden, a collection of 52 hymns published in 1564 (n.p.). It was published in a second edition in 1583 with the title, Etliche sehr schone Christliche Gesenge, wie dieselbigen zu Passaw, von den Schweitzerbrüdern, in der Gefengnuss im Schloss, durch Gottes gnad gedicht vnd gesungen worden. This edition was combined as part two with a first part bearing the title Ausbund Etlicher schöner Christlicher Geseng, wie die in der Gefengnuss zu Passaw im Schloss von den Schweitzern und auch von andern rechtgläubigen Christen hin und her gedicht worden. A 1622 reprint is identical with the 1583 edition. The next undated edition (17th century) is the first to combine the two parts into an integrated whole. The Goshen College Library has copies of all the above editions except the one of 1622, the 1564 copy being a unicum. Two hymns of the first edition (1564) were omitted in the second, viz., No. III, Lobt den Herren ir Heyden all, and No. XVII, Wir schreyen zu dir Herre Gott. The second edition (1583) added one hymn, viz., No. LIII, O Herr nit stoltz ist mein hertz doch. Thus the first edition had 52 hymns, and the second 51. Most of the hymns are anonymous; but 12 of them, signed with the initials “H.B.,” were written by Hans Betz (as Wolkan proved, not Hans Büchel as Wackernagel surmised).
