[[File:ElhorstHJ.jpg|300px|thumb|right|'''']]     Hendrik Jan Elhorst, born 29 October 1861, at Wisch in the Dutch province of [[Gelderland (Netherlands)|Gelderland]], the oldest son of W. F. G. L. Elhorst and Jacomijntje van der Ploeg, who belonged to an old family of Mennonite ministers; died 20 March 1924, at [[Amsterdam (Noord-Holland, Netherlands)|Amsterdam]]. He attended the Gymnasium at [[Deventer (Overijssel, Netherlands)|Deventer ]]and studied at the university and the [[Amsterdam Mennonite Theological Seminary (Kweekschool)|Mennonite seminary]] in Amsterdam 1880-1886, became a ministerial candidate in 1886, and served as minister in [[Irnsum (Friesland, Netherlands)|Irnsum ]]([[Friesland (Netherlands)|Friesland]]) 1887-1888, [[Arnhem (Gelderland, Netherlands)|Arnhem]] 1888-1898, The Hague 1898-1900, and Haarlem 1900-1906. He then accepted a position as professor of Hebrew and other Semitic languages, Old Testament exegesis, and Hebrew literature in the [[Amsterdam, University of (Amsterdam, Netherlands)|University of Amsterdam]] 1906-1924. He received the degree of Doctor of Theology from the University of Amsterdam (1891) and an honorary degree from St. Andrew’s University (1911), was a member and editor of the Teyler Theological Association, and was one of the founders and editors of <em>Teylers Theologisch Tijdschrift.</em>

Of his publications the following should be mentioned: <em>De Profetie van Micha </em>(1899), and <em>Israel in het licht der jongste onderzoekingen </em>(1906). He also wrote articles for Dutch and foreign periodicals.
