Edzardi (1595-1667)
Edzardi (Glaneus Jodocus) (1595-1667), pastor of St. Michael's Church in Hamburg, wrote the following books against the Mennonites: (1) Notwehr der Kindertaufe, welche die Wiedertäufer den Kindern wehren, den Mündigen zweifelhaft machen und eine gefährliche Wiedertäuferei einrichten in zwei Teilen, darin unsere Beweistümer vor die Kindertaufe wider sie verteidigt, ihre aber widerlegt werden. Mit einer ausführlichen Vorrede von der wiedertäuferischen Sekt aus ihren eigenen Büchern verfasst (Hamburg, 1636). (2) Geistliches Bade-Tuch, den neuen wiedertäuferischen Tauchern, welche nach des falsch genannten Pontani und desselben Vermehrers Jacob Mehrnings Lehre von der Besprengung oder Begiessung in der einmalig empfangen Taufe nicht vergnüget eine neue Wiedertaufe in den tiefen Strömen oder Fischteichen durch Ein- oder Untertauchen vorhaben, entgegengesetzt. Zwei Predigten am Fest der Hl. Dreieinigkeit und Johannistag dargestellt (Hamburg, 1651).
The contents of the former is indicated by the detailed title; the latter opposes the Dompelaars, under the motto of Matthew 23:24, "Ye blind guides, which strain at a gnat and swallow a camel," which he applies to Mehrning and nearly all of the Mennonites, "because they quarrel bitterly about unimportant ceremonies, and neglect the most necessary and most comforting articles of faith." This (says he) is especially true of immersion, which creates a dangerous offense, for it disquiets simple souls concerning their baptism by pouring or sprinkling. The latter is of course Scriptural; Christ was baptized in the Jordan by pouring. Although immersion occurred in the warm Orient, nevertheless, then as now, baptism by sprinkling or pouring is equally valid. This he expounds at great length with illustrations from the Bible.
