Doyer, Assuerus (1758-1838)
Assuerus Doyer, the son of Antoni Doyer and Tanneken Schimmelpenning, was born 13 December 1758 at Zwolle. He studied at the Mennonite seminary in Amsterdam 1778-1783, then at the university of Halle, taking his doctor's degree under Prof. Wolff. After a period in Zwolle he studied under Prof. Gerrit Hesselink at Amsterdam. In 1787 he was called to Kleve as pastor and in the following year to Krefeld. In 1793 he resigned and lived with his father-in-law Matthijs van Maurik on a small estate near Zwolle. In 1794 the Zwolle congregation asked him to assist their sick pastor Thomas Menalda and in 1799 he became Menalda's successor. In 1833 he sought to retire, but the church gave him an assistant, Lambertus ten Cate Coster, with whom he worked until 1836. He was an opponent of religious liberalism, which was prevalent at that time in Holland, and maintained active contact with the revival movement known as the Reveil. He died on 21 March 1838, trusting, as he confessed, not in the perishable good that he had done, but in the mercy of his Saviour and Redeemer.
Doyer was characterized by great zeal, purity, and eagerness to learn, and occupied himself all his life in a study of the Bible. For many years he was vice-president of the board of directors of the Mennonite seminary in Amsterdam. In 1787 he married Katharina van Maurik (d. 1804) and in 1805 Magdalena Teune (d. 1836). The following books came from his pen: Specimen philosophicum de duello (Halle, 1786); Leerrede ter aanprijzing van de Koepok-inenting (ZwoUe, 1808); Brieven over de aanbidding van Jezus Christus (Zwolle, 1911); Hulde aan Joannes Chrysostomus (Zwolle, 1815) ; Twee Leerredenen over het lijden van onzen Heiland (Zwolle, 1817); Leerrede ter viering van het derde eeuwfeest der Hervorming (Zwolle, 1817); Invallende gedachten (Zwolle, 1825); Vraagboek, over de Wet der Tien geboden, het Gebed des Heeren en de Twaalf Artikelen des geloofs (Zwolle, 1825); Bijdrage ter instandhouding en bevordering van godsdienstige plechtigheden bij de Gemeenten der Doopsgezinden (Zwolle, 1825); Redevoering ter aanprijzing van het begraven der lijken buiten de steden (Zwolle, 1826); Vertaling en uitlegging van den Eersten brief van den Apostel Petrus (Zwolle, 1827); Vertaling van den Eersten brief van den Apostel Johannes, met Aanmerkingen (Zwolle, 1829); Schriftuurlijk Vraagboek voor kinderen (Zwolle, 1831); Verhandeling over den zelfmoord {Vaderlandsche Letteroefeningen, 1827).
