Doerksen, Heinrich (1855-1933)
Heinrich Doerksen was a minister and farmer. He was born on 4 August 1855 to Abraham (1827-1916) and Katharina Friesen (1832-1876) Doerksen in the village of Bergthal, South Russia. He was the second of 12 children, three of his siblings died as infants. In 1874 he came to Canada with his parents and settled in Schönthal on the East Reserve in Manitoba. Here he was baptized 5 June 1876 and that same year married his first wife, Sarah Neufeld (1857-1879). Their marriage produced one child. Heinrich was called to the ministry 8 December 1887 by the Chortizer Mennonite Church. In 1879 his first wife died and the following year Heinrich married Katharina Dueck (1860-1943). Together they had 13 children, only one of which died in infancy.
For many years Heinrich kept a diary describing daily life in the village of Schönthal. As a result, he left a valuable legacy of historic significance when he died in 1933.
