In the spring of 1989, Garry and Ruth Prieb were asked by the British Columbia Mennonite Brethren (MB) Board of Church Extensions to consider beginning a church planting ministry in Campbell River on Vancouver Island.  They accepted this challenge and began their ministry in July 1989 together with 6 members of the Black Creek MB Church. Discovery Community Church held their first public worship service on 15 October 1989 and the church plant was officially organized on 18 November 1990. The congregation initially met in the Discovery Inn, the source of its name.

Since inception in 1989, Discovery Community Church has held worship services in a total of four public facilities in Campbell River.  They started out as a group of 34 people and grew to a congregation of over 180 meeting in the gym of the Sportsplex. In 2005 they were blessed with the opportunity to acquire land for a future home.
