Dirk Meeuwesz (Dirck Mieuwesz), an Anabaptist martyr, was burned at the stake at Vlissingen (Flushing), Dutch province of Zeeland, on 8 May 1571, after he had been imprisoned for more than a year. Once he had the opportunity to escape from prison but he did not, because he did not want to get his jailer in trouble. He steadfastly suffered martyrdom.
