Coster family

Coster was a Dutch Mennonite family found especially at Almelo, province of Overijssel, where a number of this family lived as linen weavers and later as textile manufacturers. Gerrit Coster, a descendant of a non-Mennonite family from Westphalia, Germany, living in Almelo, is said to have been the first of this family to join the Mennonite Church.

In course of time the Coster family, which soon became closely related by marriage with other Mennonite families in Almelo, such as ten Cate and Willink, was very loyal to the congregation; many of them served as deacons. In the 18th century the family is also found in other congregations.

At least two members of the Coster family served as pastors: Herman Gerrit Coster of Almelo (1801-1869) was pastor of Noordzijpe (Oudesluis) 1831-1836 and Winterswijk 1836-1866; Lambertus ten Cate Coster, also of Almelo (died 1877), served at Zwolle 1833-1858.
