Corte Belijdenisse des Geloofs ende der Voornaemster Stucken der Christenlijcke Leere (Short Confession of Faith and of the Principal Points of Doctrine) is a Dutch confession, drawn up by Hans de Ries and Lubbert Gerritsz in 1610. This confession usually is called the Waterlander Confession. Already in 1577 Hans de Ries in cooperation with Jacob Jansz and others had drawn up a confession of 25 articles (published in Doopsgezinde Bijdragen 1904, 145-56). The particular purpose of this 1610 confession was to accomplish a union between the Waterlanders and a group of English Brownists living at Amsterdam and led by John Smyth. To this end de Ries and Gerritsz composed a confession of 38 articles, to which later two more articles were added. This confession like that of 1577 is a typical Waterlander confession. "It is founded on the Scriptures as the revelation of God; it is Biblical without being dogmatic; it presents faith and no theology" (Kühler, , 95). It did not mean to prescribe what had to be believed, but to define the creed. For the rest it is very moderate: shunning (avoidance) is not inserted and concerning buitentrouw (intermarriage) it takes a broad stand. This confession of 40 articles was first printed in 1618 (Hoorn). It was reprinted at De Rijp 1624, Hoorn 1643, de Rijp 1658, de Rijp 1681, Amsterdam 1716, Rotterdam 1740, Amsterdam 1741, and besides this published in H. Schijn, Geschiedenis der Protestantsche Christenen in't Vereenigde Nederland genoemd Mennoniten, . . . (Amsterdam-Utrecht, 1727) 153-190. There is also a German translation by J. C. Schmellentin, published 1741 in Amsterdam, entitled: Ein kurz Bekäntnusz der fürnämsten Hauptstückken des Christlichen Glaubens.... A Latin translation was published in 1723 in Amsterdam: Joannes Resius et Lubbertus Gerardi, Praecipuorum Christianae fidei articulorum brevis conjessio ....
