Cool, Pieter (1807-1891)
Pieter Cool, born 31 October 1807 at Amsterdam, educated at the seminary in Amsterdam and the university of Leiden, became the Mennonite minister at Purmerend in 1832, and at Harlingen in 1836; he retired in 1872. He died 12 September 1891; in 1838 he married Catharina Fontein (1808-1871), of an old Mennonite family at Harlingen. Their son Gerrit was pastor of the Wormerveer op het Noord congregation in 1866-1899. Cool was, as his works indicate, a modernist in theology and a total abstainer from the use of alcohol. Collaborating with D. Harting, the Mennonite minister at Enkhuizen, he founded the Doopsgezinde Bijdragen in 1861, and served as its editor until 1869. In 1870 he published in this yearbook an article (1-15), "De hoogste roeping der Friesche Doopsgezinde Societeit en soortgelijke vereenigingen," and in 1877 (101-132), 1878 (78-97), and 1880 (1-41), "Iets over en uit het archief der Doopsgezinde gemeente te Harlingen." Besides a work on Arabic linguistics, the following of his works (all published in Harlingen) should be mentioned: Redevoering bij het 25jarig bestaan van het Nederlandsch Bijbelgenootschap (1839); Gesprekken over het leven van Jesus door Strauss (1840); Een woord van opwekking om lid te worden van de vereeniging tot afschaffing van sterken drank. (1854); Waarheid in beeiden (1857 and 1867); Is byzondere liefde tot zijn kerkgemeenschap een Christelijk, beginsel? (1857); De stichting der nieuwe Doopsgezinde kerk te Harlingen (1858); Lezen-eten (1859); De afschaffing der afschaffingsgenootschappen (1860); De feestmorgen van Zondag 13. Oct. 1861 herdacht (1861); Een levensrecept (1869). He and P. Feenstra, Jr., together published Gedenkschrift van het Menno-Simons monument (Zwolle, 1879). In addition to these works he published a number of articles in the magazines, De Gids and Licht, lief de, leven.
