Compromis was an agreement reached in 1566 or 1567 by two Dutch Mennonite groups, viz., the Flemish and the Frisians, among whom there had been some differences since 1565. Jan Willemsz and Lubbert Gerritsz intermediated, and after much discussion succeeded in reconciling the two groups. The leaders of both sides agreed to submit the question to Jan Willemsz and Lubbert Gerritsz as judges and henceforth to keep peace. But the Compromis did not last and soon the two factions separated and remained so for about 75 years. The text of Compromis is found in V. P., Successio Anabaptistica (BRN) and also in Protocol, Dat is alle Handelinge des Gesprecks tot Emden (Emden, 1579, Fol. 371 b.). Concerning the Compromis, what preceded, and what followed, see the study of J. G. de Hoop Scheffer: Het verbond der vier steden in Doopsgezinde Bijdragen, 1893 1-90 (concerning the name, Compromis see p. 4.1 note 2).
