Claes Opreyder, an Anabaptist martyr, was taken prisoner by the Spaniards at Deventer, Dutch province of Overijssel on 11 March 1571, together with 11 other Mennonites. He was burned at the stake at Deventer on 16 June 1571. After he had ascended the scaffold platform he knelt for prayer, but the executioner disturbed him because the Spaniards wanted to avoid the impression that he was a man of faith.
