A group of Habesha (Ethiopian and Eritrean people) began meeting in homes in Ottawa, Ontario in October 2005. When seeking a larger location for worship, a member with connections to the Meserete Kristos Church (Mennonite Church in Ethiopia) suggested contacting the Ottawa Mennonite Church.
