Chortitza (Khortitsa), a village in the province of Ekaterinoslav (now Zaporizhia Oblast), of the district of Chortitza, belonging to the first Mennonite settlement in Russia founded in 1789 near Alexandrovsk (Zaporizhia), situated on the Dnieper, with about 6,100 acres of land. In the village there were a Greek Orthodox and a Mennonite church, a secondary school established in 1842, a preparatory school with a two years' course established in 1890, a girls' school established in 1895, for the founding of which Abraham Neufeld, the well-known teacher at the Zentralschule and later director of the German Realschule in Berdyansk, rendered great service, two elementary schools, 131 business establishments, among them three important factories of agricultural machinery (Lepp and Wallmann, Koop, Hildebrandt). The railway station of Chortitza was near the village and had telegraph, telephone, and district government offices. The obelisk erected on the square in 1889 commemorated the centennial of Mennonite settlements in Russia. Chortitza was one of the chief intellectual centers of the Mennonite settlements in Russia.
During the Revolution (1917) and after, the village of Chortitza suffered much and underwent a great change. Through the nationalization and enlargement of the Mennonite industries and the exile of Mennonites a shift in population occurred. In 1941 the population consisted of 2,178 Mennonites and nearly 12,000 Russians and other nationalities.
