In 1952 the Indiana-Michigan Mennonite Mission Board purchased three and one-half acres of land on Caney Creek in Kentucky and planned to build a church and home there. Fred Hays, a member of the Belmont Mennonite Church in Elkhart, Indiana, directed the initial work in Kentucky. Wayne and Mae Wenger and their family moved from Dryden, Michigan, to lead the work in August 1952.

The Caney Creek church building was dedicated on 24 May 1953.

In 1968, the Caney Creek Mennonite Church changed its affiliation to the Conservative Mennonite Conference.
