Buys (also Buis) is a common Dutch family name which is also found among the Mennonites. Evert Buys is mentioned in 1688 as preacher of the Mennonite congregation at Brielle (Inv. Arch. Amst.). Cornelis Buys was preacher of the Flemish congregation at Aalsmeer in the first quarter of the 18th century (Naamlijst of 1731). In the congregation of de oude vermaning at Aalsmeer, which was served until 1866 by untrained preachers, four members of this family were serving during the 19th century. Willem Willems Buys, elder 1822-18150; Gerrit Buys, preacher, later elder, 1849-1866; Jan Buys, preacher 1855-1866, and Willem Gerritsz Buys, preacher until 1866. The name of Buys is still very common among the Mennonites of Aalsmeer. In Zaandam, where Jan Jacobsz Buys was a preacher in the Oude Huys from 1746 until his death in 1753, a large number of the Buys family served as deacons.
