Brieven, a Dutch periodical published by the Vereniging voor Doopsgezind Broederschapswerk, formerly called the Vereniging voor Gemeentedagen. This periodical was distinctive, especially so in the early years, in that it was composed mostly of letters from readers. The first issue appeared May 1918. Initially the issues appeared irregularly, and from January 1925 to April 1942 the Brieven appeared monthly; after this date they were discontinued by order of the German military authorities. Beginning in 1946 this periodical was again published, at first irregularly, but in the 1950s three or four times a year. Originally the Brieven was edited by a committee; from 1920 to April 1922, P. G. Slogteren was in charge of the editing, followed by J. E. van Brakel, October 1922 (Brieven No. 14) to November 1928; thereafter W. H. toe Water, January 1929 to November 1936; and A. H. A. Bakker from December 1936 to April 1942. It was usually 24 pages in size, but occasionally much larger for special issues. It discontinued about 1956, but a monthly supplement in the Algemeen Doopsgezind Weekblad was intended to fill the same purpose.

The Brieven provided a good insight into what has transpired in the Mennonite brotherhood in the Netherlands those years and witness to the spiritual renewal which has taken place through the efforts of the Vereniging voor Gemeentedagen.
