1990 Update
The Bowling Green, Missouri, USA), Old Order Amish Settlement is located in Pike County, 50 mi. (80 km.) nw. of St. Louis. It was founded in 1947 by Amish families from Jay County, IN. The Pike County settlement is the oldest and third largest Amish community in the state. Its growth has been slow in its 40-year history. Several newer locations in the state have attracted more Amish families because of better farmland in more ideal locations. All of [[Missouri (USA)|Missouri]]'s 12 settlements were established after World War II as young families sought cheaper land in the postwar industrial expansion. With less stringent state regulations on the schooling of their children, Amish found the state of Missouri to be ideal for new settlements. -- Samuel L. Yoder
