Karl Wilhelm Bouterwek, b. 30 August 1809 at Tarnowitz in Silesia, d. 22 December 1868 in Elberfeld, a prominent educator, who spent the last years of his life in a thorough study of church history in Rhenish Prussia and Westphalia. In 1863 he founded the Bergische Geschichtsverein and became its president. In 1864 he discovered Bernhard Rothmann's book on vengeance, entitled Ein ganz köstlicher Bericht von der Rache und Strafe des Babylonischen Greuels an alle wahre Israeliten und Bundesgenossen Christi hie und da zerstreuet, durch die Gemeinde Christi zu Münster (December 1533). In 1864 Bouterwek also published Zur Literatur und Geschichte der Wiedertäufer (Bonn, 1864). This book contains the three pamphlets of the Münster Anabaptists, (1) Bekenntnisse von beiden Sakramenten; unterzeichnet am 22. Okt. 1533 von Bernhard Rothmann, Joh. Kloprijs, Hermann Sta prade, Henrik Roll, Dionysius Vynnen und Gotfriedus Straten; (2) Restitution, which like the above is presented with the full text and provided in part with important historical annotations; (3) the booklet, Von der Rache des babylonischen Greuels. In addition Bouterwek's book contains a Bekenntnis einiger Personen, so der Wiedertaufe and des Münsterischen Unwesens halber allhie zu Wesel im Jahre 1535 eingezogen wurden, and Bericht des Henricus Greiss über die Wiedertäufer zu Wesel.
