Bos, Ragger (18th century)

Ragger Bos, a Dutch (untrained) Mennonite preacher, serving the congregations of Zwartsluis 1754-1787, and Noordeind van Graft and Rijp 1787-1796. Bos was one of the first Dutch Mennonite ministers to be interested in politics; he was an ardent adherent of the Patriots, and in 1787 he had to flee because of his radical democratic views. Upon his return to Zwartsluis after a few months some trouble on this question arose in the congregation. Bos then moved to Graft. It was Bos who in 1789 in a conference of the Rijper Societeit advanced the idea of establishing a fund to aid the widows and orphans of Mennonite ministers. This fund (see <em>Fonds tot ondersteuning</em>) was actually founded in 1794.
