The Bloomfield, Iowa Old Order Amish settlement began in 1971 when three brothers, David Yutzy, Henry Yutzy and Norman Yutzy, moved to Bloomfield from Hazelton, Iowa. Until 1975, church services, baptisms and communion services were supplied by leaders from the nearby Kalona Old Order Amish settlement.

The Bloomfield settlement extends west from Bloomfield to beyond the hamlet of West Grove, and beyond Drakesville to the north.

Bishop George Gingerich moved to Bloomfield from Kokomo, Indiana in 1975. Henry Hochstedler was the first locally ordained minister in 1975. He became bishop in 1981.

Bloomfield has been a rapidly growing settlement; by 2015 it was composed of 10 church districts with a total of about 267 families.
