Halbe Binnerts, Doopsgezind Jaarboekje (1923)

Halbe Binnerts (b. 26 October 1842, at Heerenveen, where his father was a notary, d. 5 January 1922, at Voorburg) was baptized at Leeuwarden in 1862, studied law at the University of Leiden and received his degree in 1867 with summa cum laude. He opened a law practice in Heerenveen. Here he married Magdalena Hermanna Greidanus in 1870. He was very active in affairs pertaining to social welfare; among other things he founded a savings bank. He was a member of the States of Friesland. In 1899 he was made vice-president of the court at Leeuwarden (until 1911) and in 1916 a member of the upper chamber of the States-General. From 1899 to 1911 he lived in Leeuwarden, and found time to devote to the general welfare in addition to his legal work. He was an active and honored member of the Masonic lodge, serving as its chairman after 1909.

In various functions Binnerts served the Mennonite brotherhood. In Heerenveen and also in Leeuwarden he was a member of the church council. He served as treasurer of the Friesche Doopsgezinde Societeit 1902-1911, and on the executive committee of the Algemeene Doopsgezinde Societeit 1882-1911, and as its chairman in 1892. He was active on all sorts of Mennonite committees and organizations. The existence of the Dienstjarenfonds was due to his efforts. His friend M. L. Deenik wrote a biographical sketch in the Doopsgezinde Jaarboekje of 1923.
