Bijl is a Dutch Mennonite family, descending from Pieter Hansz Bille, b. 1668, at Ribe, [[Denmark|Denmark]], a Lutheran who settled in [[Amsterdam (Noord-Holland, Netherlands)|Amsterdam]]. One of his descendants, Pieter Bijl, b. 1807 at Hoorn, d. 1855 at Amsterdam, became a member of the Mennonite Church and married Maartje Hartog, daughter of Jan Hartog, Mennonite minister at [[Beemster (Noord-Holland, Netherlands)|Beemster]].
