Beryslav (Beryslav; Ukrainian: Берислав) is a city in the Russian province of [[Kherson (Kherson Oblast, Ukraine)|Kherson]] (now [[Ukraine|Ukraine]]), located on the Dnieper River, and the center of the region which had been promised by [[Potemkin, Prince Grigori Alexandrovich (1739-1791)|Potemkin]] to the Mennonites of [[Danzig (Poland)|Danzig]] in the 1780s for settlement purposes. The land was located on the Konskaya River on the left bank of the Dnieper. Later when a second delegation met Potemkin in Kremenchug in 1789 he informed them that the land was not safe because of the Russo-Turkish war and advised them to settle on the [[Chortitza River|Chortitza River]] farther north. This change in the settlement became one of the sources of friction between the settlers and the delegates, [[Höppner, Jakob (1748-1826)|Höppner]] and [[Bartsch, Johann (1757-1821)|Bartsch]].

Beryslav (Beryslav; Ukrainian: Берислав) is a city in the Russian province of Kherson (now Ukraine), located on the Dnieper River, and the center of the region which had been promised by Potemkin to the Mennonites of Danzig in the 1780s for settlement purposes. The land was located on the Konskaya River on the left bank of the Dnieper. Later when a second delegation met Potemkin in Kremenchug in 1789 he informed them that the land was not safe because of the Russo-Turkish war and advised them to settle on the Chortitza River farther north. This change in the settlement became one of the sources of friction between the settlers and the delegates, Höppner and Bartsch.
