Bergthal Colony (Bolivia)

Bergthal Colony, Bolivia, is located about 30 km. (19 miles) northeast of Santa Cruz or about eight km. east of the Canadiense colony. It was founded in 1963 by about 25 families from the Menno colony in Paraguay, who were joined by some 20 families from Canada. The group belongs to the Saskatchewan Bergthal Mennonites (closely related to Sommerfeld Mennonites). In 1986 there were 127 members belonging to the church with a total population of 306 inhabitants. Both groups, the one from Paraguay as well as those from Canada, left their home countries because of modern religious and educational trends in their home communities. In 1986 people in this small farming community were generally quite poor.
