Beidler is a Mennonite family name found as early as 1724 in Otterberg, a town in the Palatinate. The name is also found early in Bavaria. Johannes Bütler arrived in Philadelphia from the Palatinate 1 September 1736. John Beutler who was born in Germany 4 July 1792, came to America, and settled in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. From the eastern part of Pennsylvania the family has spread into the states of Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Iowa, and Kansas.

Prominent in this family was Jacob A. Beutler (1833-1886), of Elkhart County, Indiana, who was ordained a minister in 1868 and bishop in 1872. He served in the Holdeman congregation (MC).

A genealogy written by A. J. Fretz entitled A Genealogical Record of the Descendants of Jacob Beidler contains the names of several thousand descendants of Jacob Beidler, who was born in Germany in 1708. A genealogical chart is also included.
