Pieter Beets Pzn (ca. 1755-1813), a son of Pieter Beets. He was appointed as proponent at Altona, and served the congregation of Blokzijl 1782-1785. Then he studied two years at the university of Groningen, meanwhile serving the congregation at Leer and Altona. In 1789 he was called to Zaandam-Nieuwe Huis, for the salary—very high for the time—of 1,100 guilders. From 1789 to 1813 he was minister at Zaandam, where he found time in additional to his pastoral work and his duties as supervisor of schools, to train young men for the ministry, especially those who did not like the liberal theology of the Lamist seminary at Amsterdam. He was the author of a number of booklets, especially for young people—Körte verhalen voor Kinderen (2 vols.); De vriendschap der jeugd (3 vols.); and Onderwijs in de godsdienst van Jesus Christus. The Bibliotheek der theologische letterkunde, which appeared under his supervision 1803-1807, was the first theological journal in the Netherlands; in it he reviewed theological writings that appeared in the Netherlands as well as in other countries. He was one of the founders of the Nuts-departement (public welfare) at Zaandam and promoted the organization of a French school there. He was a man of many-sided significance.
