Beachey is a Mennonite family name of Swiss origin, almost exclusively Amish since 1697. The name Bitschi was included in John Horsch's Mennonites in Europe among the Swiss Mennonite refugees in the Palatinate after 1664 who later came to America. Peter Bitsche, an Amish Mennonite, is said to have come to America from Switzerland, in 1767, settling in what is now Somerset County, Pennsylvania. A family history published in 1892 listed 751 heads of families belonging to this relationship. This family is most numerous in Mifflin and Somerset counties, Pennsylvania, and in parts of Ohio and Indiana, but it is also represented in Illinois, Iowa, Delaware, Maryland, and other states in which there are Old Order Amish or Conservative Amish settlements. Thirty-eight ordained men were listed under the variants of the name in the 1951 lists of Old Order and Conservative Amish ministers. The Peachey variant is common in Mifflin County, Pennsylvania, while the words Beachy and Beechy appear often in various communities.
