Bartel, an Anabaptist martyr, who went from Antwerp to Berchem (1550) to comfort Hans van Monster, a brother imprisoned there, was seized, and after brutal torture executed together with Hans van Monster and Old Jacob (de oude Jacob). Van Braght records further that Bartel witnessed the execution of Mary van Beckum and discussed it with Elder Hendrik van Arnhem.
