Bartel is a Mennonite family name in West Prussia, appearing in the rural Frisian congregations and in the Flemish congregation at Danzig. It was first mentioned at Montau 1639 (Bartel) and at Gross-Lubin 1640 (Bartholomäus). Thirty-three families of this name were counted in West Prussia in 1776 (without Danzig), and 171 persons in 1935 (without Elbing). Members of this family migrated to Poland, Russia (Molotschna), and the United States. H. C. Bartel, of Hillsboro, Kansas, was a Mennonite missionary to China. Peter Bartel, elder of the Gruppe congregation West Prussia, was a member of the Mennonite delegation sent to Berlin in 1867 and 1868, to plead for exemption from military service. His report on the work of this delegation was published in Mennonitische Rundschau (October 1898).

The Schönsee Mennonite Church, Prussia, had a number of elders by this name. Elder Peter Bartel of the Gruppe Mennonite Church ordained Heinrich Bartel, Culm-Rossgarten, as elder of the Schönsee church in September 1861, who died 22 September 1874. During his time the general conscription law was passed. His strong opposition to military service found much criticism in his own congregation. His son, also Heinrich Bartel, who had been chosen minister in 1887, was ordained on 4 May 1902, and died on 3 March 1905.
