Bakker, a common Dutch family name, meaning Baker. A well-known Mennonite Bakker family, many of whose members served as preachers, stems from the island of Ameland, where Sybrand Jans Bakker was an (untrained) minister of the Waterlander congregation 1718-d. 1761. His great-grandson Jacob Sybrandsz Bakker (Terschelling, 1802-1863) was pastor of Woudsend 1828-1830 and Terschelling 1830-1863. Three of his sons went into the ministry: Rienk Jacob Bakker (1827-1861) serving at Warga 1853-1857 and Aalsmeer on the Zijdweg 1857-d. 1861; Jan Fopko Bakker (1843-1911) serving at Zuid-Zijpe 1868-1873, Midwolda 1873-1875, Middelstum 1875-1877, Giethoorn-Zuid 1877-81, and Twisk-Abbekerk 1881-1908; Cornelis Bakker (1842-1899) serving at Wolvega 1866-71, Gorredijk-Lippenhuizen 1871-1879, and Franeker 1879-d. 1899. Pastor Gerrit Bakker did not belong to this family. His son Claas Bakker served at Leermens-Loppersum 1836-d. 1884. Henricus Bakker was 1723-d. 1756 a preacher of the Amsterdam Zonist church, Hendrik Jacobs Bakker (1752-1848) served at Rasquert 1792-1796, Veendam-Wildervank 1796-1804, Heerenveen 1804-1809, and Middelie-Azwijk 1809-1838. A Jan Michiels Bakker, d. 1849, was a preacher at Oude Niedorp 1813-1831 and at Den Ilp 1831-1849.
