<p><b>New page</b></p><div>John B. Baer was born at O’Fallon, [[Illinois (USA)|Illinois]] on 19 May 1854 of Bavarian Mennonite parentage. He was a member at first of the [[First Mennonite Church (Summerfield, Illinois, USA) |Summerfield]] ([[General Conference Mennonite Church (GCM)|General Conference Mennonite]]) congregation. After irregular attendance in the local elementary schools, he attended at various times educational institutions at Lebanon, Illinois, [[Wadsworth Mennonite School (Wadsworth, Ohio, USA)|Wadsworth, Ohio]], Bloomfield, New Jersey, and was finally graduated in 1887 from the Union Theological Seminary in New York. While in school he engaged in local city mission work in New York, and later worked as colporteur in [[Canada|Canada]] for the [[American Tract Society|American Tract Society]].<br />
