Samuel Bähler was a Swiss Mennonite preacher and elder of Langnau, Switzerland, cofounder and editor of the Zionspilger, a weekly periodical published since 1881 by the Mennonites in the Emmental (Switzerland), which soon secured a number of faithful subscribers outside Mennonite circles. Bähler was also active in the Sunday school, and as the founder and conductor of the choir of the Emmental congregation, which still functioned in the 1950s. This indefatigable man succumbed to lung trouble on 28 January 1890, only 38 years of age, soon after the dedication of the meetinghouse of the congregation.
