Auhagen, Otto (1869-1945)

Otto Auhagen was the agricultural expert in the German embassy at Moscow in 1929, at the time when thousands of Mennonite refugees were gathering at Moscow in the hope of escaping imminent catastrophe by emigration. Doctor Auhagen took an unselfish interest in these people, aiding them with expert advice, and induced the Soviet government to yield to their request; above all he repeatedly presented the distress of these refugees to the German embassy and the Berlin government, thus definitely influencing its attitude in this affair.

In gratitude for his aid and interest the "Moscow refugees" who settled in Santa Catarina on the Stolz Plateau of Brazil in 1930 named their settlement Auhagen. In the Fernheim Colonyin the Paraguayan Chaco, which was likewise founded by these refugees, village No. 9 was named Auhagen.
