Assuerus van Gheemont (d. 1552)

Assuerus van Gheemont, a silversmith and probably an Anabaptist preacher, was imprisoned at Antwerp together with Jeronimus Segers and Hendrick Beverts. While the execution of Jeronimus and Hendrick took place on 1 or 2 September 1551, that of Assuerus was delayed until 22 January 1552. On the rack Assuerus revealed the names of many other Anabaptists, and apparently for this betrayal his name is not included in the martyr books. By the fact that he died at the stake, we may assume that he remained true to his faith.
