Amazon Valley Indian Mission (AVIM), was established in 1955 at Araguacema, Goias, [[Brazil|Brazil]], under an independent Mennonite ([[Mennonite Church (MC)|Mennonite Church]]) board with the same name, whose founder and field director was Howard Hammer (d. 1957). In 1958 the work was taken over by the [[Mennonite Board of Missions (Mennonite Church)|Mennonite Board of Missions and Charities]], although the AVIM board continued to support the work.
