New page

Adriaen de Hoedemaker (also called Kort-Adriaentgen van Gent: Short Adriaen from Gent), whose official name was Adriaen van den (or der) Zwalme, an Anabaptist martyr, was burned at the stake at Bruges in Belgium 7 August 1573 (1574 in Martyrs Mirror is an error). Adriaen, who was a hatter by trade, was baptized about 1572 by the elder (oudste) Paulus van Meenen. Shortly afterwards he was imprisoned at Ghent, and after being retained a year in prison, he softened under the repeated trials, and abjured his faith. Having thus become free, he went to Dordrecht in the Dutch province of South Holland. After four months he returned to Flanders, and avoiding Ghent, established himself at Bruges, where he joined the congregation. Before long he was recaptured and remained faithful to death. Adriaen was twenty one years of age. He was the last martyr in Bruges.
